The Abyss is many things--a tense underwater thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat, a dazzling sci-fi adventure that took the first step into the exciting world of CGI effects and paved the way for later works such as Terminator 2: Judgment Day and even The Lord of the Rings, a thought-provoking morality tale about the human capacity for destruction and for redemption, and a mature, compelling love story of two people finding each other again on the brink of losing each other forever.
It begins when a US submarine goes down in the middle of the Atlantic, with no apparent cause, on the edge of the Cayman Trench. The crew of a deep-sea oil rig, its "cast-iron bitch" (her words not mine) designer and a SEAL team are sent to investigate the wreck and find the cause, but find more than they ever dreamed when a non-terrestrial intelligence (NTI) from the bottom of the trench makes contact. Their investigation becomes a fight for survival when the crew becomes stranded below while the storm of the century rages on the surface above. And as if things weren't bad enough, the deadly leader of the SEAL team is slowly losing his mind to pressure sickness and pursuing a desperate vendetta against the beings from the abyss, leaving the fate of both humanity and the NTIs in the balance and an estranged couple's rekindled love as the key to survival.
